Today we fly over to Italy and especially Puglia, with some great advices by another “local” #winelover Frank D’Angela, who travelled much and get much and many wine skills. He will probably feature others articles since he is a perfectionist and wants to share more of his tips!
Puglia (Apulia Region), Italy.
Apulia (Italian Puglia) is a region in Southern Italy bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east and the Ionian Sea to the south east. It is often called as “ The Jewel of the seas “ and it is surrounded by the bluest waters in Europe. Its most southern portion, known as “ Salento “ peninsula , forms a high heel on the ”boot” of Italy.
Puglia is one of the richest archaeological regions in Italy. It is home of the most fascinating castle built by Frederick II (Castel del Monte). This wonderful Castle is protected as a World Heritage Site.
Alberobello is a stunning city located in Val D’Itria (Itria Valley). Many “ Trulli “ are located here. A trullo (plural, trulli) is a traditional Apulian dry stone hut with a conical roof. Even Trulli are protected as World Heritage Site.
The city of Lecce is very famous for its architecture and art (Baroque Style) and is nicknamed as “ The Florence of the South “.
The cuisine of Puglia is very simple and delicious. The best products of the Mediterranean Diet are available everywhere in the region. The food consists primarily of fruits, vegetables, poultry, seafood, grains, beans and pastas. Also eggplant, artichokes, squash, tomatoes, legumes, onions, mushrooms, cucumbers, and a variety of greens are served fresh, baked, roasted, sautéed, grilled, and puréed. Olive oil, wine and cheeses are also major components of Puglia cooking.
Puglia is the biggest italian producer of high quality olive oil (Extra Virgin Quality ) and one of the greatest producer of fine wine.
Traditional dishes includes but are not limited to: “ Orecchiette “, a kind of home‐made pasta, “ Bruschetta “ (it consists of grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with olive oil, salt, pepper, basil and tomatoes) and “ Pasta e fagioli “ (pasta and beans).
Puglia, this stunning region, is one of the Top Wine Travel Destination 2013 selected by the Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

My passion about wine started when I was just 10 years old, because my uncle was a very famous producer in the Chianti Classico Wine Area (Tuscany, Italy). I spent a lot of time with him, especially in the summer times, and followed in love with wine. Right now I’m Enologist, Sommelier & Traveler… Traveling around the World to export the finest Italian and European wines. I spent more than 8 years in the wine business… I worked 5 years in New York City as wine consultant and 3 years in Seoul (South Korea) as Importer and I also was Founder & CEO at my own Company (D’Angela Group Co. Ltd). I’m actually living in Italy, which is my country and planning a new export business that will be ready very soon. I’m very fascinated about wine which is to me an infinite and fantastic World…
That’s a little bit of my life story…
